Costain Awarded FEED Contract for BP's Hydrogen Pipeline in Teesside
Key Ideas
- Costain secures FEED contract from bp to design a 31 km hydrogen pipeline network in Teesside for industrial customers.
- bp's H2Teesside plant will produce 160,000 t/y of blue hydrogen, capturing and storing CO2 emissions offshore.
- The project aims to decarbonise industry in Teesside, establish a hydrogen hub, and boost the UK's low carbon hydrogen economy.
- Costain previously completed the FEED for the East Coast Cluster's CO2 pipeline system, a key component of the carbon capture efforts in the region.
Costain has been awarded a front-end engineering and design (FEED) contract by bp for the development of a hydrogen pipeline network in Teesside as part of the East Coast carbon capture cluster. The contract involves engineering a 31 km onshore pipeline distribution network to transport purified and dehydrated hydrogen from bp's planned hydrogen plant to industrial customers in the region. The H2Teesside plant by bp will be a blue hydrogen facility with the capacity to produce 160,000 t/y, utilizing natural gas reforming while capturing and storing CO2 offshore. This initiative aligns with the UK government's efforts to create industrial clusters that reduce natural gas consumption and capture CO2 emissions. Andy Lane from bp highlighted the significance of these agreements in advancing the H2Teesside project towards EPC contracts and construction, emphasizing its potential to drive decarbonization in Teesside and establish the region as a prominent hydrogen hub. Costain, in addition to the hydrogen pipeline project, completed the FEED for the East Coast Cluster's onshore CO2 pipeline system, a vital element of the carbon capture strategy. The broader development includes contracts worth £4bn for designing and constructing the CO2 pipeline network and a power plant, supported by the government's £20bn commitment for carbon capture projects. Costain's role extends to overseeing the EPC of the onshore CO2 gathering systems and utilities, signaling a concerted effort to propel the region towards a sustainable, low carbon future.
