Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) and ATCO EnPower have successfully completed the construction of two hydrogen production and refueling stations in Calgary and Edmonton, Alberta. CPKC is actively involved in its Hydrogen Locomotive Program, where diesel locomotives are being retrofitted with hydrogen fuel cells to operate without generating as many emissions. Kyle Mulligan, CPKC Assistant Vice President, highlighted the importance of these facilities in advancing the testing of their hydrogen locomotives and contributing to a lower carbon transportation future. ATCO EnPower played a vital role by providing engineering, procurement, and construction services for the hydrogen refueling stations and will operate them as well. Mark Brown, Executive Vice President of Projects and Operations at ATCO EnPower, emphasized the significance of these completed facilities in utilizing hydrogen as a fuel source for commercial transportation, showcasing a commitment to sustainable energy solutions. Each facility includes a 1-megawatt electrolyzer, compression, storage, and dispensing systems specifically designed for locomotive refueling. Notably, in Calgary, the electrolyzer is powered partly by renewable electricity sourced from CPKC's existing solar power facility.
