DuPont has announced that their MOLYKOTE® HP-300 Grease has met the stringent hydrogen purity standards outlined in ISO 14687:2019. In collaboration with HyCentA Research GmbH, an innovative lubricant testing protocol was developed to align with these standards. The grease underwent extensive testing involving exposure to hydrogen at 700 bar pressure for several weeks, followed by a detailed analysis for gas and particle contamination. The results indicated that the MOLYKOTE® HP-300 Grease did not significantly contaminate hydrogen, ensuring its compatibility with critical hydrogen applications such as fuel cell stacks. This achievement is a significant advancement in hydrogen technology.
Pure hydrogen is susceptible to contamination by various materials it comes in contact with, including lubricants. The testing confirmed that even low concentrations of impurities in hydrogen, as low as 4 parts per billion, can potentially compromise fuel cell integrity. The MOLYKOTE® HP-300 Grease is positioned as a viable lubricant solution for components exposed to hydrogen, reducing contamination risks and preserving critical parts' integrity. Additionally, its performance in extreme conditions supports safe hydrogen storage, transportation, and utilization as a next-generation fuel.
Apart from maintaining hydrogen purity, the MOLYKOTE® HP-300 Grease offers resistance against hydrogen and many chemicals, along with excellent low-temperature performance down to -40°C, crucial for applications like vehicle refueling. It is also compatible with a wide range of substrates, including elastomers and plastics, and does not contribute to hydrogen embrittlement.
By mitigating contamination risks in hydrogen systems, DuPont is actively promoting cleaner energy solutions. The MOLYKOTE® HP-300 Grease serves as a fitting solution that meets the demanding requirements of the hydrogen energy sector. DuPont's commitment to innovation and technology in developing this hydrogen-compatible lubricant reinforces its position as a leader in the industry.
