Empowering Europe's Transition: Nordic-Baltic Hydrogen Corridor Pre-Feasibility Study
Key Ideas
  • The pre-feasibility study successfully outlines the Nordic-Baltic Hydrogen Corridor (NBHC) project, focusing on technical, legal, organizational, and economic aspects crucial for its implementation.
  • The corridor aims to transport up to 2.7 million tons of renewable hydrogen annually across six European countries, playing a pivotal role in achieving the EU's decarbonization goals.
  • By integrating renewable hydrogen and reducing carbon emissions by up to 37 million tons of CO2 equivalent per year by 2050, the NBHC project enhances energy security and supply diversity in the region.
  • Publicly granted the status of the project of common interest by the European Commission, the NBHC is poised to attract investments, create jobs, and foster industrial innovation in the region.
The Gas Transmission System Operators (TSOs) of Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, and Germany's Ontras have successfully completed a pre-feasibility study of the Nordic-Baltic Hydrogen Corridor (NBHC), aiming to transport renewable hydrogen between the six countries. The study, initiated in January 2024, covers technical, legal, organizational, and economic aspects essential for the corridor's realization. By 2040, the corridor aims to transport 2.7 million tons of renewable hydrogen annually, contributing significantly to the EU's decarbonization efforts. With a potential to reduce carbon emissions by 37 million tons of CO2 equivalent per year by 2050, the NBHC enhances energy security, supply diversity, and supports the decarbonization of hard-to-abate sectors in Europe. The project has been granted the status of the project of common interest (PCI) by the European Commission, enabling access to EU project funding and streamlined permitting procedures. The corridor is seen as a cornerstone in Europe's transition to sustainable energy, fostering green electricity generation, renewable energy use, hydrogen infrastructure development, and job creation. Moving forward, a feasibility study will delve into detailed technical analysis, commercial assessment, and implementation timelines of the NBHC, marking a significant step towards a decarbonized and sustainable energy future.
