Exploring Integration of Hydrogen Refuelling Stations in the UK Gas Network
Key Ideas
  • A study led by Costain, funded by Ofgem, will investigate the integration of hydrogen refuelling stations into the UK's gas network for increased demand for FCEVs.
  • The research aims to address the lack of hydrogen refuelling infrastructure in Wales and the South West of England and explore using the natural gas network for hydrogen fuelling.
  • Costain's research will consult with stakeholders to forecast future demands, recommend locations for hydrogen refuellers, and contribute to the UK's decarbonisation goals.
  • The initiative aims to make hydrogen-powered vehicles a viable and sustainable alternative to traditional petrol and diesel vehicles by leveraging existing infrastructure.
A new study, led by Costain and funded by Ofgem, is set to explore how hydrogen refuelling stations can be integrated into the UK’s existing gas network to meet the growing demand for fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) and other zero-emission vehicles. This research, undertaken for gas network Wales & West Utilities (WWU) as part of the HyDrive initiative, aims to tackle the lack of hydrogen refuelling infrastructure across Wales and the South West of England. The study will investigate the possibility of utilizing the country’s natural gas network as a potential hydrogen fuelling infrastructure to support FCEVs, offering a sustainable alternative to traditional petrol and diesel vehicles. This initiative is crucial in addressing the challenges highlighted by WWU during a recent trial of a hydrogen van, where the main obstacle encountered was the scarcity of refuelling locations. Costain's researchers will collaborate with key stakeholders to analyze current road transport demands, predict future needs, and suggest suitable locations for converting existing petrol stations into hydrogen refuellers. The ultimate goal is to contribute to the UK's decarbonisation and energy transition objectives by making hydrogen-powered vehicles a practical reality. Laura Hughes, Costain's energy sector director, emphasized the importance of hydrogen in the UK's decarbonisation efforts and praised Wales & West Utilities for its leadership in the HyDrive initiative. The research is expected to provide valuable insights into overcoming barriers to the widespread adoption of hydrogen-powered vehicles, leveraging Costain’s expertise in handling hydrogen safely and ensuring actionable outcomes.
