  • The EU aims to produce and import significant amounts of green hydrogen by 2030, driving investments in projects like the 3MW plant in Helsinki.
  • The project combines different sectors like electricity, heating, transportation, and hydrogen, showcasing a comprehensive approach to sustainable energy solutions.
Finnish energy company Helen Oy has entered into a partnership with MAN Energy Solutions and H-TEC SYSTEMS to establish a 3MW green hydrogen production plant just outside Helsinki. The plant, located near Helsinki's district heating network and the Vuosaari Harbour, will utilize renewable energy sources to produce green hydrogen through PEM electrolysis. This method is considered to be more energy-efficient than traditional alkaline electrolysis. The EU's ambitious goal of producing and importing green hydrogen by 2030 is a driving force behind such projects. MAN Energy Solutions will be responsible for the overall engineering, procurement, and construction of the plant, in addition to providing hydrogen-related equipment. H-TEC SYSTEMS, a subsidiary of MAN Energy Solutions, will supply three PEM electrolysers for the facility. These electrolysers are designed to produce up to 1,350kg of green hydrogen per day, utilizing energy from Helen's renewable portfolio. The green hydrogen produced will be distributed to industrial customers through a pipeline, showcasing a sustainable approach to meeting energy demands. Waste heat generated during the production process will be utilized in Helen's district heating network, further enhancing the plant's efficiency and sustainability credentials. Sari Mannonen, Helen Oy's senior vice-president of business and hydrogen, highlighted the significance of the project, emphasizing its unique integration of different sectors and the flexibility it offers in managing energy needs. The collaborative efforts of the involved companies signify a step forward in Finland's journey towards a greener and more sustainable energy future.
