Industry Leaders Collaborate to Advance Green Hydrogen Production in South Wales and South West England
Key Ideas
  • Industry leaders partner to establish green hydrogen generation demonstrator plants in South Wales and south west England.
  • Projects aim to demonstrate the viability of green hydrogen in industry, transportation, and heat provision, replacing fossil fuels.
  • Initiatives include using wastewater and renewable energy sources to produce green hydrogen and reduce carbon emissions.
  • The collaboration focuses on advancing renewable energy solutions and achieving self-sufficiency in energy production by leveraging green technology.
An innovative collaboration project between industry leaders aims to accelerate the generation and use of green hydrogen on industrial sites. Wales & West Utilities has secured funding to partner with Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water, Yeo Valley, and Hydrostar to establish green hydrogen generation demonstrator plants in South Wales and the south west of England. The project is part of the NextGen Electrolysis: Wastewater to Green Hydrogen initiative, focusing on producing green hydrogen from renewable sources like wind and sunshine through electrolysis. The partnership includes installing a 100% hydrogen boiler at a wastewater treatment works in Cardiff, using a hydrogen blend in existing boilers, and utilizing wastewater as feedstock for electrolysis. The aim is to demonstrate the feasibility of green hydrogen technology in real-world applications, reducing carbon emissions and costs associated with production. The project also explores the potential of green hydrogen distribution to customers and supports energy self-sufficiency goals. By leveraging renewable energy sources like solar power, the initiative contributes to the energy transition and sustainability efforts in the UK.
