A consortium led by Yorkshire Water has been awarded £2.3m from the Ofwat Innovation Fund for its Advanced Thermal Conversion Gasification technology. The project, in partnership with Enertecgreen and several other organizations, aims to convert sewage sludge into biochar, ash stones, and hydrogen-rich syngas. By operating at high temperatures, the process also targets the destruction of contaminants like PFAS and microplastics. The innovative Gasification process intends to showcase the circular economy by utilizing biochar as a wastewater treatment media, soil improver, and construction material, while generating green electricity and high-value products. The project aligns with the water sector's goals of achieving sustainability and efficiency, offering a transformative solution for sewage sludge disposal. Additionally, collaborations and research efforts focus on maximizing the utilization of Gasification-derived products for wastewater treatment, carbon sequestration, and energy production.
