Major Milestone Achieved in Hydrogen Pipeline Project in Teesside
Key Ideas
  • Costain awarded FEED contract to support onshore distribution network for hydrogen delivery in Teesside.
  • BP's new production facility in H2Teesside will produce 160,000t of blue hydrogen per year, aiming to displace natural gas consumption.
  • The project is seen as a significant step towards UK decarbonisation, creating jobs and skills in the region.
  • H2Teesside project, part of the East Coast Cluster, aims to transform Teesside into a leading hydrogen hub and kickstart the UK's low carbon hydrogen economy.
Costain has been awarded a front-end engineering and design (FEED) contract for a pipeline project in Teesside, UK. The project aims to deliver purified and dehydrated hydrogen from BP's new production facility H2Teesside to industrial end-users in the region. Costain's work includes addressing issues like contamination from previous usage and designing a network to safely transport hydrogen to replace natural gas. BP's facility is set to produce 160,000t of blue hydrogen annually, contributing to decarbonisation efforts in the UK. The project is expected to create jobs, develop skills, and improve infrastructure in the North East. Technip Energies was also selected by BP to deliver FEED for the hydrogen production site. H2Teesside is part of the East Coast Cluster, focusing on carbon capture, usage, and storage projects to decarbonise industry in the region. The overall goal is to establish Teesside as a prominent hydrogen hub and drive the UK's transition to a low-carbon hydrogen economy.
