MGEN's Green Milestone: Singapore's Largest Hydrogen-Ready Power Plant
Key Ideas
  • MGEN's subsidiary PLP has received approval to build a 600MW hydrogen-ready CCGT plant in Singapore, set to operate in January 2029.
  • The plant will be the region's most efficient, incorporating a Battery Energy Storage System and the capability to use up to 100% hydrogen.
  • This project aligns with Singapore's ambitions for sustainable energy, enhancing its power infrastructure and promoting a low-carbon future.
  • The facility's expandable greenfield site may include a second CCGT unit and carbon capture technology, strengthening PLP's market position.
Meralco PowerGen Corp. (MGEN) has achieved a significant milestone through its subsidiary PacificLight Power Pte Ltd (PLP) in Singapore. The Energy Market Authority (EMA) of Singapore has given the green light for the construction of a massive 600-megawatt hydrogen-ready combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) plant on Jurong Island. This plant, scheduled to be operational by January 2029, is poised to become Singapore's largest H-class CCGT facility, symbolizing a new pinnacle of efficiency in the region's power generation sector. MGEN's president and CEO, Emmanuel V. Rubio, underlined the importance of this project in meeting Singapore's evolving energy requirements while championing innovation and sustainability. The plant's design includes a cutting-edge Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), a pioneering feature for a CCGT unit in Singapore. Additionally, the plant will have the flexibility to use up to 30% hydrogen initially, with future plans to transition to 100% hydrogen based on market and regulatory conditions. This significant development complements PLP's existing 830 MW CCGT plant operational since 2014 and a 100 MW Fast Start capacity under construction. The site's scalability allows for a second CCGT unit and potential integration of carbon capture technology in the future. Manuel V. Pangilinan, chairman and CEO of Meralco, emphasized the strategic importance of this project in reinforcing PLP's position within MGEN's core operations. Yu Tat Ming, PLP's CEO, highlighted how the incorporation of hydrogen-ready and battery storage technologies positions PLP as a frontrunner in the transition towards a sustainable, low-carbon energy future. This initiative is part of Singapore's broader strategy to fortify its power infrastructure and embrace environmentally responsible practices, signaling a positive step towards a greener future.
