MOL Group Unveils Central and Eastern Europe's Largest Green Hydrogen Plant at Százhalombatta Refinery
Key Ideas
  • MOL Group inaugurated a 10-megawatt green hydrogen plant at Százhalombatta Refinery, producing 1,600 tonnes of clean hydrogen annually.
  • The plant reduces the Danube Refinery's carbon dioxide emissions by 25,000 tonnes per year, equivalent to the emissions of approximately 5400 cars.
  • Plug Power's electrolysis equipment is used to produce hydrogen and oxygen from water, with the plant generating 8-9 tonnes of pure oxygen per tonne of hydrogen.
  • The new EUR 22 million plant will help MOL Group transition to green energy, with plans for similar facilities in Bratislava and Rijeka by 2026.
MOL Group has unveiled the largest green hydrogen plant in Central and Eastern Europe at its Százhalombatta refinery. This plant has a 10-megawatt capacity and produces 1,600 tonnes of clean, carbon-neutral green hydrogen per year. The electrolysis unit provided by Plug Power uses electricity from renewable sources to break down water into hydrogen and oxygen, without generating any polluting by-products. This innovative technology also produces 8-9 tonnes of pure oxygen per tonne of hydrogen. The plant's operations will help reduce the Danube Refinery's carbon dioxide emissions by 25,000 tonnes annually, which is equivalent to the emissions of roughly 5400 cars. MOL Group aims to further expand the use of green hydrogen in the transportation sector to enhance its green energy transition strategy. The EUR 22 million investment in this plant signifies a significant step towards sustainability, as it will gradually replace the natural gas-based production process, which currently contributes to one sixth of MOL Group's total carbon dioxide emissions. The company plans to establish similar green hydrogen plants in Bratislava and Rijeka, with the latter expected to be operational by 2026. The utilization of green hydrogen not only benefits the environment but also aligns with MOL Group's commitment to innovation and sustainability.
