Namibia is gearing up for a significant transformation towards green industrialization, with a focus on developing a robust green hydrogen sector. The Namibian government, through the leadership of James Mnyupe, has outlined a comprehensive plan in the 'Blueprint for Namibia's green industrialization'. The plan entails substantial investments totaling over US$55 billion, with US$15 billion allocated for crucial infrastructure projects, including the expansion of railway and port facilities in key locations like Walvis Bay and Lüderitz. One of the flagship projects is the US$10 billion green hydrogen industrial plant near Lüderitz, which forms a cornerstone of the green industry development along with investments in green manufacturing such as electrolysis, wind turbines, solar panels, and a glass factory. The plan also includes ventures into lithium refining, battery manufacturing, and synthetic fuel production for export markets, particularly Europe. To fund these ambitious initiatives, Namibia aims to attract significant foreign direct investment, targeting a five-fold increase from the current levels to bolster sectors like mining, tourism, and agriculture. The prospect of enhancing Walvis Bay's role as a regional logistics hub is also highlighted, with plans to upgrade the container port and dredge the area to accommodate future growth.
