Located just east of Edmonton in Sherwood Park, a new house named 'HomeOne' is revolutionizing Canadian suburban living by being the first home in the country to be fueled by pure hydrogen instead of natural gas. This innovative project, a collaboration between Atco and Qualico, aims to showcase the safety and efficiency of hydrogen gas for heating buildings, with a long-term vision of all homes in the future Sherwood Park community of Bremner being heated by this clean energy source. The move towards hydrogen is part of the broader clean energy transition, as hydrogen is light, storable, energy-dense, and emits no direct greenhouse gases. While most hydrogen production worldwide currently relies on fossil fuels, Alberta's vast natural gas reserves make hydrogen development particularly attractive in the province. Despite the prevalent emphasis on electrification and heat pumps for home heating decarbonization in North America, Atco believes that hydrogen can be a viable solution in regions facing electricity supply challenges like Alberta's. With the increasing demand for electricity due to the growth in electric vehicles and AI-powered data centers, the potential of hydrogen in the home heating sector is gaining momentum, positioning it as a key player in the sustainable future of energy consumption.
