The petroleum industry and households heavily invested in traditional transport technologies face the challenge of transitioning to zero-emissions transport. While battery electric vehicles may not immediately displace fossil fuel vehicles due to accessibility and limited transport improvements, repurposing existing fossil fuel infrastructures to supply clean fuels could be a practical solution. Clean fuel alternatives like hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, biofuels, and e-fuels offer potential for decarbonizing transport and can be used in existing vehicles via current infrastructures. This approach could accelerate the conversion of entire vehicle fleets to run on clean fuels while addressing the need for refuelling infrastructures. Carbon capture storage technology may enable oil companies to produce zero-emissions hydrogen and profit from decarbonizing industries like steelmaking. Collaboration and industry-wide agreements, coupled with regulatory oversight, are essential for successful repurposing initiatives. Lessons from history suggest that existing vehicles can be easily converted to run on clean fuels, providing a cost-effective alternative to purchasing new vehicles. By repurposing fossil fuel infrastructures, oil companies could avoid sunset investments, contribute to decarbonization efforts, and potentially profit from transitioning sectors dominated by coal.
