Thermax and Ceres Power Collaborate for Green Hydrogen Revolution in India
Key Ideas
  • Thermax partners with Ceres Power to manufacture and sell advanced solid oxide electrolysis (SOEC) technology for green hydrogen production, aiming to revolutionize the hydrogen production landscape.
  • The collaboration aims to deliver systems that are up to 25% more efficient than existing low-temperature electrolysis technologies, making it a viable solution for decarbonising hard-to-abate industries like ammonia, steel, refineries, and chemical production.
  • Thermax plans to establish a manufacturing facility for electrolysers, develop the supply chain, and localize critical components, positioning the company as a global provider of large-scale SOEC systems for commercial applications.
  • Both companies express enthusiasm for the partnership, highlighting the importance of driving sustainable solutions, accelerating energy transition, and enabling industrial decarbonisation through the adoption of green hydrogen technology.
Thermax, a prominent energy and environment solutions provider in India, has announced a strategic collaboration with Ceres Power Holdings plc to produce green hydrogen using Solid Oxide Electrolysis (SOEC) technology. This partnership includes a global license agreement for Thermax to manufacture, sell, and service stack array modules (SAM) based on Ceres' advanced SOEC technology. The collaboration between Thermax and Ceres Power aims to advance the deployment of SOEC technology in India and globally to facilitate cost-effective green hydrogen production. By leveraging Thermax's experience in heat integration and waste heat recovery, the companies plan to manufacture pressurised SAM and develop SAM balance of module (SBM) and multi-megawatt SOEC electrolyser modules. The innovative systems developed through this partnership are expected to be up to 25% more efficient than current low-temperature electrolysis technologies, providing an effective solution for decarbonising industries such as ammonia, steel, refineries, and chemical production. Thermax intends to establish a manufacturing facility for electrolysers, localize key components, and strengthen the supply chain to support large-scale deployment of SOEC systems. Both companies have expressed optimism about the collaboration, with Thermax's Managing Director highlighting the importance of embracing renewable energy sources like green hydrogen. The CEO of Ceres Power emphasized the significance of entering the Indian market to drive industrial decarbonisation and enable the transition to green hydrogen technology. This partnership signifies a crucial step towards sustainable energy solutions and accelerating the adoption of green hydrogen in India and globally.
