UKOG Leading Project to Create Massive Hydrogen Storage Caverns in Portland Harbour
Key Ideas
  • UK Oil & Gas PLC is spearheading a project to build 19 large hydrogen storage caverns in Portland Harbour, each the size of St Paul's Cathedral.
  • The plan aims to address energy shortages from wind and solar sources and has received support from Energy Secretary Claire Coutinho for taxpayer subsidies.
  • The project involves drilling wells and creating caverns in high-quality rock salt, with each cavern capable of holding 320,000 cubic meters of hydrogen.
  • Despite controversies in oil and gas, UKOG is transitioning towards renewable energy, making hydrogen storage a strategic priority.
UK Oil & Gas PLC (UKOG) is undertaking a significant project to establish extensive hydrogen storage caverns in Portland Harbour, Dorset. The project involves excavating 19 caverns, each comparable in size to St Paul's Cathedral, to store hydrogen for emergency utilization during energy shortages from wind and solar sources. UKOG is seeking planning permission promptly by utilizing the nationally significant infrastructure system to overcome local opposition. Energy Secretary Claire Coutinho has expressed support for the initiative, amending government policy to enable taxpayer subsidies. The project's location at Portland Port is deemed suitable due to the high-quality rock salt available. The process includes drilling wells and dissolving salt with water to create caverns, which will be managed by UK Energy Storage, a subsidiary of UKOG. These caverns, measuring 85 meters in diameter and 90 meters high, have the capacity to store 320,000 cubic meters of hydrogen. Despite UKOG's past controversies in onshore oil and gas operations, the company is shifting its focus towards renewable energy, with hydrogen storage playing a pivotal role. This development comes shortly after UKOG faced challenges with the Supreme Court blocking its onshore oil well in Horse Hill, Surrey, indicating potential impacts on future onshore operations.
