Uniper Secures Long-Term Energy Deal for Stegra's Green Hydrogen and Steel Plant in Northern Sweden
Key Ideas
  • Uniper has signed a 6TWh electricity supply agreement with Stegra's plant in Boden, Northern Sweden, ensuring energy for green hydrogen and steel production from 2027 to 2032.
  • Stegra's Boden plant, aiming to produce green steel at a large scale, marks the first greenfield steel mill development in Europe since 1974.
  • Additionally, Axpo Nordic has partnered with Stegra for a 2.25TWh electricity supply deal starting in 2027 to also support the Boden plant.
  • Uniper's recent partnerships in Poland for wind power projects and in Germany for a battery storage system highlight their commitment to renewable energy development.
Uniper has finalized a significant long-term power purchase agreement with Stegra, a deal that will see Uniper supplying 6 terawatt hours of electricity to Stegra's green hydrogen and steel production facilities in Boden, Northern Sweden. This agreement, spanning from 2027 to 2032, is crucial for meeting the energy demands of Stegra's ambitious project. The Boden plant, which is currently under construction, is set to become a key player in the production of green hydrogen, green iron, and green steel, with an initial target of 2.5 million tonnes of green steel annually. This development marks a milestone as the first greenfield steel mill to be established in Europe since 1974. In addition to Uniper's partnership, Axpo Nordic, as a subsidiary of Axpo Group, has also entered into a power purchase agreement with Stegra, providing 2.25 terawatt hours of electricity over three years to support the Boden plant. Moreover, Uniper's recent collaborations in Poland for onshore wind power projects and in Germany for a battery storage system further showcase their commitment to renewable energy ventures. The partnership with Polish project developer WAP Energia focuses on developing onshore wind projects with a combined capacity of 600MW. Uniper's engagement with NGEN in Germany aims to construct a 50MW/100 megawatt-hours battery energy storage system project in North Rhine-Westphalia, scheduled to be operational by 2025. These initiatives highlight Uniper's dedication to advancing sustainable energy solutions and contributing to the reduction of industrial emissions in Europe.
