The Western Green Energy Hub (WGEH) mega-project in Australia has reached a significant milestone as plans for its 70GW solar and wind capacity have been submitted for approval to the Environmental Protection Authority. The project, initially valued at AU$100 billion, has seen its generating capacity increased from 50GW to 70GW, with around 3,000 wind turbines and up to 35 solar PV power plants planned across the vast site. Stage One of the development is set to generate 6GW of renewable power and 330,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually through electrolysers. Moreover, the project aims to accommodate data centers to support the growing digitalization trend, taking advantage of the abundant renewable energy resources available. The construction, situated in southeastern Western Australia, will cover an extensive area ideal for solar and wind energy, with plans to produce 3.5 million tonnes of green hydrogen per year. Noteworthy is the participation of Mirning Green Energy, representing Aboriginal interests, with an equity stake and a position on the project's board. Despite its ambitious scale, the project faces scrutiny due to environmental concerns, as seen in the rejection of a similar 26GW Asian Renewable Energy Hub proposal in 2021. Overall, the Western Green Energy Hub signifies a major leap towards sustainable energy production in Australia, combining renewable power generation, green hydrogen output, and support for digital infrastructure.
