This initiative, utilizing Advanced Thermal Conversion Gasification technology, aims to eliminate contaminants and repurpose waste for beneficial applications. The project involves a consortium consisting of technology provider EnertecGreen, Queen’s University Belfast, Carbon Trust, and several major water companies. Notable participants include Thames Water, United Utilities, Anglian Water, Scottish Water, and others. The project envisions a circular economy approach by repurposing biochar for wastewater treatment and construction materials, potentially reducing the carbon footprint in these sectors. The carbon-rich biochar offers improved soil water retention and nutrient retention, making it a sustainable option for long-term carbon sequestration. Moreover, the vitrified ash 'stones' are expected to serve as sustainable aggregate in construction, contributing to lower carbon emissions. The synthesis gas generated, containing hydrogen among other components, can be utilized for green electricity production and the creation of high-value products like aviation fuel.
