The University of Nottingham has unveiled the Zero Carbon Innovation Centre (ZCIC) to drive the development of clean energy and transport technology. Done in collaboration with East Midlands Freeport, Research England, and Loughborough University, the initiative aims to bolster decarbonisation efforts in industries like aerospace, automotive, marine, rail, and energy, while also generating high-value job opportunities in the East Midlands region. Situated at Nottingham’s Jubilee Campus with an additional presence at Loughborough University, the ZCIC will offer cutting-edge research and development capabilities, encompassing areas such as electrical machine manufacturing, robotics, digital twinning, and green hydrogen production. The centre's megawatt-class testing and digital twin platform have been designed to expedite the creation and market entry of zero-carbon solutions. Claire Ward, Mayor of the East Midlands, emphasized the significant economic and environmental benefits of the ZCIC, recognizing it as a crucial step towards pioneering research and progress in transport technology and clean energy solutions. Alex Norris, Minister for Local Growth and Building Safety, commended the project for its alignment with the UK's Plan for Change and aspirations to establish itself as a clean energy powerhouse. By collaborating with existing net-zero R&D hubs like the Power Electronics and Machines Centre (PEMC) and the forthcoming Hydrogen Propulsion Systems Lab, the ZCIC is set to cement the East Midlands' position as a frontrunner in zero-carbon technology advancement.
