Japanese energy supplier Akasaka Heating & Cooling Supply has announced its plans to incorporate green hydrogen in its district heating system located in the Akasaka 5-chome district of Minato-ku, central Tokyo. This initiative represents a milestone as the first of its kind in central Tokyo. The company intends to use green hydrogen sourced from an undisclosed location in Japan to produce heat and electricity for the district. By utilizing fuel cells for electricity generation and transitioning from city gas, Akasaka aims to contribute to the reduction of CO2 emissions related to cooling and heating production. The green hydrogen will be transported to Tokyo by trucks and stored in special hydrogen storage alloy tanks at the underground facility. These tanks ensure safe storage by adsorbing the hydrogen onto a special alloy, significantly reducing its volume. The stored hydrogen will be integrated with Panasonic fuel cell systems which are scheduled for installation by October 2025 and will be operational by January 2026. These fuel cell systems will generate electricity for various uses within the plant. Additionally, a portion of the hydrogen will be combined with natural gas for use in hydrogen-mixing combustion boilers to provide heating to buildings in the district. This move towards green hydrogen utilization and sustainable energy practices is a significant step forward for Akasaka Heating & Cooling Supply in promoting environmental responsibility.
