Apollo's Vision for Offshore Green Hydrogen Production
Key Ideas
  • Apollo completes a DEFINE study for the Hydrogen Offshore Production Project (HOP2), aiming to develop large-scale offshore green hydrogen production.
  • The study focuses on repurposing existing oil and gas infrastructure on the UK Continental Shelf and exploring the construction of new offshore facilities.
  • Recommendations include repurposing existing assets, collaborating with suppliers for bespoke electrolyser designs, and advancing green hydrogen production for environmental goals.
  • This initiative underlines Apollo's commitment to advancing renewable energy technologies and achieving positive economic and environmental outcomes.
Apollo recently finalized a comprehensive study for the Hydrogen Offshore Production Project (HOP2) in collaboration with the Net Zero Technology Centre (NZTC). The project, supported by a £2.12M grant from the Scottish Government's Just Transition Fund (JTF), aims to pave the way for large-scale offshore green hydrogen production. Led by a team of expert engineers, Apollo analyzed the feasibility of utilizing existing offshore structures on the UK Continental Shelf for hydrogen production while maintaining safety and operational efficiency. The study evaluated offshore assets, developed equipment lists, and explored various layout options, emphasizing the hydrogen production process involving water treatment, electrolysis, and compression. Phil Westmorland, Apollo’s Decarbonisation Director, hailed the study as a significant step towards decarbonization, highlighting the potential of offshore green hydrogen production to advance renewable energy technologies and promote positive economic and environmental outcomes. The study's recommendations included options for new offshore assets or repurposing existing substructures, with an emphasis on collaborating with suppliers to develop tailored electrolyser designs suitable for offshore use. These findings showcase Apollo's dedication to driving green hydrogen production in alignment with broader environmental objectives, emphasizing innovation and sustainability in the energy sector.
