Steel producer ArcelorMittal France has awarded the construction of an electrolyser for green hydrogen production to the Westfalen Group, marking a significant shift from fossil hydrogen. The project, situated in north-east France, is a pioneering endeavor for Westfalen AG, set to commence operations in January 2026 to supply the ArcelorMittal plant in Florange. The partnership aims to replace fossil hydrogen with green hydrogen from 2026, produced on-site by a new electrolyser. This initiative reflects a commitment to sustainability and signifies a strategic move towards renewable energy sources within the steel industry. The agreement, signed by the CEOs of ArcelorMittal France and Westfalen AG, outlines a cooperation set to extend until the 2040s. Westfalen AG is poised to invest tens of millions of euros in the project, focusing not only on hydrogen production but also on establishing a hydrogen filling station in close proximity for various applications.
