Asahi Kasei and De Nora Collaborate on Small-Scale Hydrogen Electrolyzers
Key Ideas
  • Asahi Kasei and De Nora have signed an MOU to develop and sell small-scale pressurized alkaline water electrolyzers for green hydrogen production.
  • The collaboration aims to meet the increasing demand for compact hydrogen production systems and leverage the expertise of both companies in the electrolysis field.
  • Both companies are looking to offer a one-stop solution for electrolysis, covering technology development, supply chain construction, and operation support.
  • The partnership is expected to contribute to the development of the hydrogen market, lower adoption hurdles, and support decentralized hydrogen production in various sectors.
Asahi Kasei Corp. from Tokyo and Industrie De Nora S.p.A from Milan, Italy have recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for a collaboration in the development and sale of small-scale pressurized alkaline water electrolyzers. The partnership is driven by the increasing demand for green hydrogen as a clean energy alternative, with the global installed capacity of water electrolyzers expected to grow significantly by 2030. Asahi Kasei aims to expand its portfolio into small-scale containerized pressurized electrolyzers, ranging from 1 to 7.5 MW, to cater to the evolving needs of customers in the hydrogen market. Leveraging De Nora's expertise in electrode catalysts and electrolyzer technology, the collaboration seeks to provide technical support, sales, operation, and after-sales service for these systems. The collaboration is part of Asahi Kasei's broader business model to become a comprehensive solution provider in the electrolysis field, encompassing technological development, supply chain management, operation technology, and support systems. Both companies believe that their combined strengths will play a crucial role in advancing the adoption of water electrolysis systems and driving the hydrogen market forward. Executives from Asahi Kasei and De Nora have expressed optimism about the partnership, highlighting the potential to lower adoption barriers, support decentralized hydrogen production, and accelerate the transition to sustainable energy solutions. The collaboration is also expected to facilitate the ramp-up of production at De Nora's Italian Gigafactory, further enhancing their electrolyzer manufacturing capabilities.
