BASF Environmental Catalyst and Metal Solutions (ECMS) recently inaugurated a new laboratory in Hannover, Germany, with a dedicated focus on advancing research in anode and cathode platinum group metal (PGM)-containing catalysts and components for the green hydrogen market. The laboratory's strategic investments aim to enhance BASF's position in partnering with component producers in the green hydrogen sector. The laboratory in Hannover will leverage BASF ECMS's expertise in catalysis and precious metals to develop innovative catalysts for water electrolysis. By concentrating on key areas such as synthesizing advanced water electrolysis catalysts and preparing catalyst coated membranes (CCMs), the lab will work towards the development of low-iridium (Ir) catalysts to address cost and scarcity issues related to iridium in proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers. Moreover, the new facility will conduct electrochemical testing of CCMs under various conditions to evaluate performance and degradation. It will also provide support for customer-specific projects and conduct fuel cell testing, enabling BASF ECMS to assist regional customers with product development activities. The establishment of this laboratory signifies an essential milestone for BASF ECMS as it expands its product portfolio to cover the entire hydrogen value chain while simultaneously reducing costs associated with electrolyzers and fuel cells. The initiative is aligned with BASF ECMS's broader commitment to driving the global energy transition and fostering decarbonization. By leveraging its extensive partnerships and networks in the business and customer industries, the research conducted in the new laboratory is expected to remain cutting-edge and commercially relevant, contributing to the advancement of green hydrogen technologies. BASF Environmental Catalyst and Metal Solutions (ECMS) is a global leader in catalysis and precious metals, catering to various industries including automotive, aerospace, indoor air quality, semiconductors, and the hydrogen economy. With a strong focus on sustainability and circular solutions, ECMS aims to assist its customers in creating a cleaner and more sustainable world.
