EBRD Supports Decarbonization in Uzbekistan with Landmark Renewable Hydrogen Facility
Key Ideas
  • The EBRD is financing a pilot renewable hydrogen facility in Uzbekistan to decarbonize fertilizer production and power generation, consisting of a 20 MW electrolyzer and a 52 MW wind power plant.
  • ACWA Power UKS Green H2, a joint venture between ACWA Power and Uzkimyosanoat, is receiving a financial package of $65 million from the EBRD for the development and operation of the facility.
  • The project, supported by the EBRD and Canada under HIPCA, aims to produce 3,000 tons of renewable hydrogen annually, reducing CO2 emissions by about 22,000 tonnes and replacing grey hydrogen in ammonia fertilizer production.
  • This initiative marks the second renewable hydrogen project financed by the EBRD, contributing to the transition towards sustainable and decarbonized industries in Uzbekistan, a significant recipient of EBRD funding in Central Asia.
The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is playing a pivotal role in supporting the decarbonization efforts in Uzbekistan by financing a groundbreaking renewable hydrogen facility. This initiative aims to address the carbon-intensive industries in Central Asia, with a focus on decarbonizing fertilizer production and power generation. The project includes a 20 MW electrolyzer and a 52 MW wind power plant, offering a comprehensive solution for producing renewable hydrogen. ACWA Power UKS Green H2, a collaboration between ACWA Power and Uzkimyosanoat, is set to receive a financial package of $65 million from the EBRD for the development and operation of the facility. The EBRD's support also extends to providing equity bridge loans and concessional finance from Canada under the Special Fund for the High Impact Partnership on Climate Action (HIPCA). The renewable hydrogen facility is expected to have a significant impact, producing 3,000 tons of renewable hydrogen annually and reducing CO2 emissions by approximately 22,000 tonnes. By replacing grey hydrogen with renewable alternatives in the ammonia fertilizer production sector, the project aligns with global efforts to combat climate change and promote sustainability. This endeavor not only marks a milestone for Uzbekistan but also demonstrates the EBRD's commitment to fostering sustainable infrastructure and private entrepreneurship in the region, further solidifying the country's position as a leading recipient of EBRD funding in Central Asia.
