Enhancing Hydrogen Evolution with Lead-Coated Nickel Catalyst in Alkaline Water Electrolysis
Key Ideas
  • A research team developed a lead-coated nickel catalyst to minimize degradation from reverse current in alkaline water electrolysis systems.
  • The catalyst enhances hydrogen evolution efficiency by promoting proton desorption and water dissociation, improving overall system performance.
  • This innovation increases the durability of electrolyzers, addressing the intermittent nature of renewable energy sources and advancing the green hydrogen economy.
A collaborative research effort led by Professor Jeong Woo Han from Seoul National University and including researchers from POSTECH introduced a lead-coated nickel catalyst to reduce degradation caused by reverse current in alkaline water electrolysis systems. The intermittent nature of renewable energy sources like solar and wind power necessitates reliable energy storage solutions, where hydrogen plays a key role. The study, published in Advanced Functional Materials, demonstrated that the lead coating on the nickel catalyst enhances the hydrogen evolution efficiency by facilitating proton desorption and water dissociation steps. Traditional alkaline water electrolysis systems are susceptible to electrode damage and reduced durability due to reverse current when power is not supplied consistently. The newly developed catalyst showed strong resistance to this issue through repetitive oxidation reactions during system startup and shutdown cycles. Unlike previous methods that required additional equipment to mitigate reverse current, this catalyst offers a comprehensive solution with just a lead coating. Professor Yong-Tae Kim of POSTECH highlighted the significance of this research in improving the durability of alkaline water electrolysis systems and propelling the green hydrogen economy forward. By addressing the challenges related to intermittent energy supply and electrolyzer degradation, this innovation contributes to the advancement of sustainable energy technologies.
