Nel Hydrogen Electrolyser, a subsidiary of the Norwegian company Nel, has secured a grant of up to €135 million from the EU Innovation Fund to industrialize its next-generation pressurized alkaline technology. The company has been working on this technology for over five years and has now reached the prototype stage with promising results. The initial plan is to establish an annual capacity of 1-2 GW at the Herøya facility in Norway, with potential expansions up to 4 GW for pressurized electrolyzer equipment. The decision to proceed with building the capacity is contingent on successful testing in the current prototype and planned pilot stages, as well as the acceptance of the new technology in the market. Nel's President and CEO, Håkon Volldal, expressed gratitude for the grant, highlighting its role in expediting the market introduction of their innovative technology designed to lower the costs associated with green hydrogen production. Nel is focusing solely on electrolyzer development for renewable hydrogen, with its former fueling division now operating independently as Cavendish Hydrogen. The company aims to leverage its long history of electrolyzer innovation to bring forth a new era of cost-effective and high-performance renewable hydrogen production, with the support received from entities like the EU Innovation Fund further propelling their efforts towards sustainable energy solutions.
