Portugal is setting ambitious goals in the renewable energy sector, aiming to increase the contribution of renewables in electricity consumption to 93% by 2030. The updated draft of the energy and climate plan also includes targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 55% from 2005 levels by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2045. The plan emphasizes the importance of wind and solar power, with a projected rise in overall installed renewable energy capacity to 42.9 GW by 2030. Portugal seeks to attract investment, enhance competitiveness, and ensure energy security through these measures. While the draft proposal plans to lower the target for green hydrogen electrolyzers by 45%, Portugal is just beginning to install electrolyzers and currently has minimal production of green hydrogen. The move to focus on renewables comes as European nations, including Portugal, are increasingly turning to renewable energies amidst rising gas prices following the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Notably, renewable energies supplied 61% of Portugal's electricity consumption in 2023, showcasing the country's commitment to sustainability. The revised draft of the plan will undergo public consultation until September 5 before being submitted to parliament. Environment and Energy Minister Maria da Graca Carvalho highlighted that the updated plan aligns with objectives to combat climate change and secure energy sources, positioning Portugal as a leader in the renewable energy transition.
