Slovakia's Košice Region Secures Funding for First Hydrogen Valley
Key Ideas
  • Košice Region and European partners secure 9 million EUR for Slovakia's first Hydrogen Valley through the EastGate H2V project.
  • Phase 1 includes a 2 MW electrolyzer to produce 170 tons of green hydrogen yearly for hydrogen buses and transport drones.
  • Phase 2 expands production to over 500 tons annually, introduces hydrogen-powered vehicles, and uses existing pipelines for transport.
  • Feasibility studies will support the transition to a hydrogen-based energy system, enhancing sustainability in the region.
The Košice Region in Slovakia, in collaboration with 22 partners from 7 European countries, has successfully secured financial aid of 9 million EUR to establish the country's very first Hydrogen Valley. The project, named EastGate H2V, is made possible through a grant from the Clean Hydrogen Joint Undertaking under the Horizon Europe framework. This achievement marks a significant milestone for Slovak scientists in attaining such substantial funding. Starting in April 2025, the project aims to kick off Phase 1, which involves launching a 2 MW electrolyzer by mid-2027 in Košice. This electrolyzer will produce 170 tons of green hydrogen annually, catering to the needs of 10 hydrogen buses in the region and a hydrogen-powered transport drone, along with the necessary refueling stations. Phase 2 of the project will see the construction of an additional 2 MW electrolyzer to increase hydrogen production to over 500 tons annually. This phase also includes the expansion of the regional fleet of hydrogen buses, the introduction of a hydrogen-powered waste collection vehicle, and the deployment of three more transport drones. Feasibility studies will be conducted throughout the project to repurpose existing natural gas pipelines for hydrogen transport, facilitating the transition to a more sustainable hydrogen-based energy system in the region.
