TotalEnergies has reached an agreement with German renewable developer, RWE, to acquire a 50% stake in the OranjeWind offshore wind farm project in the Netherlands. The company aims to use its share of the renewable electricity production from OranjeWind to power electrolyzer projects, producing about 40,000 tons per year of green hydrogen for the decarbonisation of TotalEnergies' refineries in Northern Europe. By allocating its share in OranjeWind to produce electricity for generating green hydrogen via electrolysis, TotalEnergies plans to cut its CO2 emissions by around five million tons per year by 2030. The production of green or low-carbon hydrogen from this partnership is expected to prevent the emission of approximately 400,000 tons of CO2 per year. Stephane Michel, President of Refining and Chemicals at TotalEnergies, highlighted that this project is a significant step towards the company's goal of reducing net greenhouse gas emissions linked to its oil and gas operations by 40% by 2030 compared to the 2015 baseline. Michel also mentioned that beyond producing green power and hydrogen, the OranjeWind project will contribute to the stability of the Dutch grid through electric boilers and battery storage. The construction of the offshore wind farm is scheduled to commence in 2026, with full commissioning expected in early 2028. Overall, TotalEnergies' collaboration with RWE on OranjeWind represents a strategic move towards sustainability and decarbonisation in the European energy sector.
