TotalEnergies Partners with RWE for Green Hydrogen Production at OranjeWind Offshore Windfarm
Key Ideas
  • TotalEnergies acquires 50% stake in OranjeWind offshore windfarm in the Netherlands to power electrolyzer capacity for green hydrogen production.
  • Approximately 40,000 tonnes of green hydrogen will be produced annually, aiding in the decarbonization of TotalEnergies' refineries in Northern Europe.
  • The project is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by around 5 million tons per year by 2030 and avoid 400,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions yearly.
  • OranjeWind will also contribute to the stability of the Dutch grid through the use of electric boilers and battery storage, with construction set to begin in 2026.
TotalEnergies has entered into agreements with developer RWE to secure a 50% share in the OranjeWind offshore windfarm, a 795-MW project located in the Netherlands. The company plans to use its portion of the renewable electricity generated by the windfarm to power 350 MW of electrolyzer capacity dedicated to producing green hydrogen. This initiative aims to produce approximately 40,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually, which will be utilized to facilitate the decarbonization of TotalEnergies' refineries in Northern Europe. By replacing carbon-intensive hydrogen currently in use, the project is expected to prevent the emission of 400,000 tonnes of CO2 per year. OranjeWind, situated 53 km off the Dutch coast in the North Sea, was awarded to RWE through the Hollandse Kust West VII tender in 2022. Apart from generating green power and hydrogen, the windfarm will enhance the stability of the Dutch grid with the incorporation of electric boilers and battery storage. Construction is scheduled to commence in 2026, with full operational capacity projected for early 2028. TotalEnergies aims to significantly reduce its CO2 emissions by approximately 5 million tons annually by 2030 through the deployment of green hydrogen. Stephane Michel, TotalEnergies' President of Gas, Renewables, and Power, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership with RWE, emphasizing the importance of green hydrogen in the decarbonization strategy for their European refineries and highlighting the project's role in the energy transition and the synergy between offshore wind and green hydrogen.
