Accelera by Cummins has made headlines by setting a new Guinness World Record with its hydrogen fuel cell electric (FCEV) heavy-duty truck in California, US. The H2Rescue truck, a Kenworth T370 prototype tailored for emergency response missions, completed an impressive 1,806-mile journey on a single fill, showcasing the endurance and efficiency of hydrogen technology. Powered by an Accelera fuel cell engine and a 250kW traction motor, the truck consumed approximately 168kg of hydrogen while cruising at speeds of 50-55mph. This achievement marks a significant milestone in the advancement of hydrogen-powered vehicles. The collaboration behind this groundbreaking accomplishment involved Accelera, the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science and Technology Directorate (S&T), the US Department of Energy (DOE), and the US Department of Defense (DoD). The success of this project underscores the importance of cross-agency cooperation and highlights the potential of hydrogen as a sustainable alternative fuel for various applications. Nicholas Josefik, an Industrial Engineer at the US Army Engineer Research and Development Centre, emphasized that using hydrogen can contribute to enhancing the nation's energy security and reliability. In a related context, Toyota had previously secured a Guinness World Record title in 2021 for the longest distance travelled by a hydrogen FCEV passenger car without refuelling, covering 845 miles in southern California.
