Advancing Fuel Cell Technology for Heavy-Duty Vehicles
Key Ideas
  • LANL and Advent Technologies collaborate on Ion Pair membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs) for heavy-duty vehicle fuel cells.
  • Advantages include wider operating temperature range, increased power generation, and greater tolerance for hydrogen fuel impurities.
  • Ion Pair technology aims to address challenges in heavy-duty vehicle electrification and may reduce costs compared to conventional fuel cells.
  • Advent Technologies licensed patents from LANL and established a fuel cell research, development, and manufacturing facility in Massachusetts.
Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) and Advent Technologies have partnered to develop Ion Pair membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs) for fuel cell-powered heavy-duty vehicles. This collaboration aims to enhance fuel cell performance, rated power, and durability in the context of heavy-duty vehicle electrification. Advent Technologies has acquired licenses for the patents from LANL and has set up a fuel cell research, development, and manufacturing facility in Massachusetts. The Ion Pair technology offers several advantages, including a wider operating temperature range, increased power generation, greater tolerance for hydrogen fuel impurities, and a simpler design that could potentially reduce costs when compared to traditional fuel cells with similar power output. This development signifies a step forward in advancing fuel cell technology to meet the power requirements of heavy-duty vehicles, especially where limitations exist for batteries and conventional fuel cells.
