AFC Energy, a UK-based hydrogen fuel cell specialist, has introduced a groundbreaking portable ‘cracking module’ known as the Hy-5 unit, designed to produce hydrogen from ammonia. Scheduled for release in 2026, this innovative unit will cater to a range of applications, such as fuel cell generators, hydrogen-powered construction machinery, and electric vehicle charging stations. Sold under the Hyamtec brand, the Hy-5 unit will offer a 'plug and play' and 'fuel as a service' model, producing 500kg/day of high-purity hydrogen priced at £10/kg. With a focus on eliminating infrastructure challenges and reducing production costs, AFC Energy aims to disrupt the market with a compact and efficient solution. The company's annual results for 2024 revealed revenues of £4 million, driven by sales to Speedy Hydrogen Solutions, showcasing a positive growth trend and a strategic emphasis on sustainable hydrogen supply. The CEO, John Wilson, highlighted the potential of the Hy-5 unit to offer a cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternative to diesel generators, positioning AFC Energy as a key player in the transition to zero-emission energy solutions.
