BASF Environmental Catalyst and Metal Solutions (ECMS) recently opened a new laboratory in Hannover, Germany, dedicated to advancing research on anode and cathode platinum group metal (PGM)-containing catalysts and components for green hydrogen production. The laboratory will leverage BASF's expertise in catalysis and precious metals to develop next-generation catalysts for water electrolysis, meeting the increasing demand in the green hydrogen market. The focus areas of the new lab include synthesizing and characterizing advanced water electrolysis catalysts, preparing catalyst coated membranes (CCMs), and developing low-iridium (Ir) catalysts to make green hydrogen production more cost-effective. The initiative also involves electrochemical testing of CCMs under various conditions to assess performance and degradation, as well as supporting customer-specific projects and conducting fuel cell testing. The lab's objectives align with BASF ECMS's broader commitment to the global energy transition and decarbonization.
