China has shifted its focus to 'blue mobility' by prioritizing the development of hydrogen as an alternative fuel over electric vehicles. The country recently released its Medium and Long-Term Plan for Hydrogen Energy Industry Development (2021-2035), outlining ambitious targets for the hydrogen sector until 2035. The plan highlights key tasks such as promoting innovation, expanding hydrogen energy systems, advancing demonstration projects, and enhancing policies and standards. Currently, China produces 33 million tons of hydrogen annually and aims to increase its share of renewable hydrogen production. By 2025, the country plans to produce 100,000–200,000 tons of renewable hydrogen and have 50,000 fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) on the roads, up from the current 7,800 vehicles. To support this growth, China will establish more hydrogen refueling stations across the country. Several Chinese companies are making significant strides in the hydrogen vehicle space. For instance, BYD, known for electric vehicles, has introduced its first hydrogen-powered car, Xiaomi is planning to produce electric and hydrogen vehicles to compete with industry giants like Tesla, and Toyota has entered a joint venture in China for fuel cell production. Although there are challenges such as high costs and infrastructure development, China's strong government backing and investment in hydrogen projects provide substantial opportunities. The country has initiated a program to assist local governments in researching hydrogen technology and implementing demonstration projects. China's shift to hydrogen technology is seen as a game-changer in the transportation industry, offering a more sustainable and competitive future. While there is competition from other brands like Hyundai, China's commitment to hydrogen development signals a new era in clean transportation and energy efficiency.
