Cummins' zero-emission division, Accelera, has expanded its hydrogen fuel cell production capabilities in Germany with the opening of a new manufacturing line at its Fuel Cell Systems Production Center in Herten. The new line focuses on producing proton exchange membrane (PEM) stacks and fuel cell modules for heavy-duty commercial vehicles like trains, buses, and trucks. This expansion aims to establish the site in Herten as a clean technology hub in Germany. The General Manager of Fuel Cells for Accelera, Dawn Wehr, expressed excitement about the new production line and reiterated the commitment to providing green hydrogen solutions for customers, further accelerating the advancement of clean, heavy-duty transportation options across Germany and Europe. The Herten site, operational since November 2021, has already created more than 100 new jobs and involved an investment exceeding $15 million. Local government officials, such as the Mayor of Herten Matthias Müller and Deputy Premier Mona Neubaur, have praised this development as a significant milestone in promoting sustainable, future-oriented processes and products in North Rhine-Westphalia. They highlight the importance of international investments in the region and the creation of high-quality jobs through commitments like this. Accelera's Herten site serves as a hub for production, testing, research, and development of fuel cell systems, ensuring in-house assembly and testing before customer delivery. The State Secretary at the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport, Hartmut Höppner, emphasized the role of fuel cells in achieving climate targets for the transport sector, particularly in reducing CO2 emissions in heavy goods transport. The opening of the production line in Herten signifies a crucial step towards integrating climate-friendly drivetrains and advancing hydrogen-based, climate-neutral logistics in the region.
