Driving the Hydrogen Highway: US Department of Energy Funds Regional Hydrogen Hubs
Key Ideas
  • US DOE's Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations announces funding for two additional regional hydrogen hubs to accelerate clean energy use in transportation.
  • Funding awards support the development of hydrogen refueling infrastructure, hydrogen-powered vehicles, and infrastructure for nationwide hydrogen adoption.
  • Initial funding awards have been issued for projects in multiple regions, including the Appalachian, California, Gulf Coast, Midwest, and Pacific Northwest.
  • Five out of seven selected regional hydrogen hubs are progressing with Phase 1 projects, focusing on hydrogen production, storage, and transportation infrastructure.
The US Department of Energy's Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations has recently announced initial funding awards for two more regional clean hydrogen hubs, expanding the total number to five. These hubs aim to create networks of hydrogen producers, consumers, and local infrastructure to promote the use of hydrogen as a clean energy carrier, particularly in the transportation sector. The awarded projects will develop hydrogen refueling infrastructure, expand the usage of hydrogen-powered vehicles like trucks and buses, and enhance maintenance facilities for hydrogen-powered vehicles. Hydrogen, recognized for its clean-burning properties and diverse applications, is crucial for decarbonizing industries such as transportation. The DOE's funding initiative, totaling up to $7 billion, seeks to accelerate the deployment of low-cost, clean hydrogen and establish networks of clean hydrogen producers and consumers across the country. The initial funding awards have been directed to various hubs, including the Appalachian Hydrogen Hub, California Hydrogen Hub, Gulf Coast Hydrogen Hub, Midwest Hydrogen Hub, and Pacific Northwest Hydrogen Hub. These projects involve activities like planning, site selection, technology deployment, and community engagement to pave the way for widespread adoption of hydrogen in different sectors. Each hub has specific plans to expand hydrogen use in transportation and develop necessary infrastructure. Notable projects include hydrogen production facilities, refueling stations, liquid hydrogen projects, and deployment of hydrogen-powered vehicles and equipment. With these recent funding awards, five out of the seven selected hubs are progressing with their Phase 1 projects, focusing on demonstrating hydrogen production facilities, pipelines, liquefaction facilities, and storage. The ultimate goal is to establish a robust hydrogen infrastructure to support the nationwide transition to clean energy and hydrogen-powered transportation.
