French maritime technology company Energy Observer, through its subsidiary EOConcept, has received funding from the European Union for the development of a groundbreaking container vessel powered by liquid hydrogen. The Energy Observer 2 project, initiated in 2022, aims to create a cargo vessel with significantly reduced carbon emissions, showcasing advanced engineering and innovative technologies. Partnerships with industry leaders like the CMA CGM Group, LMG Marin, Bureau Veritas, EODev, and Toyota have contributed to the feasibility studies and design of the vessel, scheduled for completion by 2029. The 160-meter-long EO2 vessel will feature a capacity of 1,100 TEUs and propulsion through 4.8MW fuel cells, enabling it to operate on a 1,600-nautical-mile route. The EU's recognition of the importance of clean technologies in sectors struggling with decarbonization is evident in the €40 million financial support awarded to the EO2 project, emphasizing the significance of sustainable shipping innovation.
