Energy Observer's subsidiary, EOConcept, has secured a notable €40 million grant from the European Union's Innovation Fund for their innovative project to construct a cargo ship powered by liquid hydrogen. This financial backing, alongside support from the Accor group and other partners, marks a significant milestone for the €100 million-plus Energy Observer 2 (EO2) vessel. The project, selected from a large pool of applicants, aims to revolutionize maritime transport by introducing a 160-meter-long container ship with an operational range of 1,600 nautical miles. With electric propulsion driven by 4.8 MW of fuel cells and collaborations with industry giants like Toyota, the vessel is expected to make a substantial impact on reducing CO2 emissions, equivalent to the carbon absorption of 190,000 mature trees over a decade. Victorien Erussard, founder of Energy Observer, emphasized the importance of adopting liquid hydrogen for its environmental benefits despite the challenges it presents. The project, scheduled for commercial service in 2029, showcases the feasibility and advantages of hydrogen technologies in the marine sector. Key partners from various sectors have joined forces to develop this project, focusing on advancing low-carbon technology and creating a sustainable maritime ecosystem for liquid hydrogen.
