Extreme E recently returned to Scotland, specifically to the former Glenmuckloch opencast coal mine site in Kirkconnel, to host the fourth season of the Extreme E Hydro X Prix race. This event, themed around energy, aimed to promote renewable energy development and showcase new technologies and environmental solutions. The choice of the former coal mine as the event location aligned with its future transformation into a hydro pumped storage project, emphasizing Extreme E's commitment to sustainable practices. Andy Welsh, Energy and Utility Manager for Extreme E, highlighted the importance of the site's energy spectrum and discussed the upcoming shift to hydrogen-powered vehicles, which will combine hydrogen fuel cells with onboard batteries. During the event, green hydrogen was utilized to power various aspects, demonstrating its potential to fuel homes and vehicles sustainably. Extreme E showcased a range of energy solutions at the event, including energy storage systems, fuel cells, solar panels, and the repurposing of the old coal mine into a hydroelectric plant. The success of the event was evident through the generation of energy from green hydrogen, equivalent to powering around 1,000 homes in the UK or charging an Extreme E car multiple times. Andy Welsh expressed satisfaction with the energy generation achievements during the weekend, noting a significant increase compared to the previous event in Saudi Arabia.
