Growing Interest in Hydrogen Vehicles Among UK Drivers Revealed in Survey Data
Key Ideas
  • Survey data shows a significant increase in interest among UK drivers towards hydrogen and electric vehicles for their next company car.
  • Drivers express willingness to switch to hydrogen vehicles if infrastructure is improved, highlighting the importance of refuelling stations.
  • Respondents also consider other fuel types like biodiesel, compressed natural gas, compressed air, ethanol, and liquified petroleum gas as alternatives.
  • There is a growing call for vehicle manufacturers to invest in hydrogen cars to the same extent as electric cars according to survey findings.
New research has unveiled that a considerable number of UK drivers are open to choosing hydrogen or electric vehicles for their next company car given the availability of necessary refuelling infrastructure. The survey data indicates a notable surge in interest compared to previous years. While hydrogen adoption was low three years ago, the current data showcases a significant rise in consideration for both electric and hydrogen vehicles. The survey also highlights that drivers are more likely to opt for hydrogen vehicles if the refuelling infrastructure is enhanced. Apart from hydrogen, respondents also show interest in biodiesel, compressed natural gas, compressed air, ethanol, and liquified petroleum gas, emphasizing the importance of multiple fuel options. However, a quarter of drivers prefer to stick with traditional petrol or diesel vehicles. There is a general consensus among respondents that vehicle manufacturers should invest equally in developing hydrogen cars alongside electric cars to meet the growing demand. As per the Government's Hydrogen Strategy Delivery Update, the UK currently has a limited number of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles on the road, including buses, HGVs, vans, and cars. The country has a few hydrogen refuelling stations in operation, with plans for more stations in the pipeline with government and private funding. Notable hydrogen fuel cell passenger cars available in the market are the Hyundai NEXO and the Toyota Mirai. The article also mentions actor Rowan Atkinson's support for synthetic fuels and alternative fuel cells for decarbonisation in transport. Atkinson highlights the importance of utilizing hydrogen as a way to retain the emotion of motorsport while transitioning towards more sustainable fuel options.
