H2Terminals to Supply Green Hydrogen via London Pipeline
Key Ideas
  • H2Terminals in London will supply hydrogen from its offshore energy island project in the North Sea to industrial users in East London and the Thames Estuary region.
  • An agreement with Cadent, the UK's gas distribution network, will see hydrogen delivered through the East London Hydrogen Pipeline by 2030, connecting production sites near Tilbury and Thames Enterprise Park.
  • The project involves utilizing wind, wave, and solar energy for hydrogen production, liquefaction, transportation, and distribution through specialized vessels and terminals on the Thames Estuary.
  • The partnership aims to accelerate the industrial transformation in London, combat climate change, and lay the groundwork for a zero-carbon industrial revolution in East London.
London-based H2Terminals has signed an agreement to supply hydrogen from its offshore energy island in the North Sea to industrial users in East London and the Thames Estuary region. A memorandum of understanding with Cadent, Britain’s gas distribution network, will facilitate the supply through the East London Hydrogen Pipeline, set to be operational by 2030. The hydrogen will be produced using wind, wave, and solar energy at the offshore island in the North Sea. Specialized vessels will transport liquefied hydrogen to terminals on the Thames Estuary, where it will be distributed to industrial consumers in Central East London. The collaboration with Cadent aims to accelerate the adoption of green hydrogen infrastructure in London, contributing to the fight against climate change. H2Terminals' partnership with supply chain partners HiDROGEN and D3IM is geared towards assessing the feasibility of the green hydrogen project in the UK. The project also involves Lloyd’s Register to identify regulatory requirements for the development of the offshore island and the supply chain. H2Terminals' CEO expressed optimism about the partnership with Cadent, highlighting the importance of combining innovative production capabilities with a robust network to drive industrial transformation and combat climate change. The East London Pipeline Project Manager also emphasized the collective effort to establish a zero-carbon industrial revolution in East London through the supply of green hydrogen. Furthermore, as part of the offshore energy island project, H2Terminals is collaborating with London P&I Club to develop insurance solutions for the shipping of green hydrogen. This includes coverage for hydrogen-powered vessels, liquid hydrogen storage systems, and features like onboard fuel cells and autonomous operations, ensuring the safety and sustainability of the transportation process.
