Hans Group Holdings Secures Hydrogen Supply for Citybus Fleet Decarbonisation Efforts
Key Ideas
  • Hans Group Holdings, owner of Citybus, partners with Grand Resource Hydrogen for hydrogen supply, aiming to decarbonize the fleet.
  • Grand Resource Hydrogen will provide a minimum daily supply of five tonnes of hydrogen at mainland prices to support Citybus' transition to a low-carbon fuel.
  • Citybus plans to have a hydrogen fleet for over 1,700 buses by 2045, with current efforts focusing on gradual expansion and cost-effectiveness.
  • Despite challenges like high hydrogen costs in Hong Kong, the agreement signals a step forward in sustainable public transportation initiatives.
Hans Group Holdings, the majority owner of Citybus in Hong Kong, has taken a significant step towards decarbonizing its public transportation fleet by securing a hydrogen supply agreement with Grand Resource Hydrogen Energy Science & Technology. The deal, signed recently, ensures a daily minimum supply of five tonnes of hydrogen at prices equivalent to those in mainland China. This partnership aims to address concerns regarding the source and affordability of hydrogen as a low-carbon fuel for Citybus. Hans Group CEO Yang Dong expressed confidence that this agreement will support the transition of Citybus to a hydrogen-based fleet. While currently operating only one hydrogen fuel cell bus, Citybus plans to have a fleet of over 1,700 hydrogen buses emitting zero emissions by 2045. This ambitious goal aligns with Hong Kong's decarbonization deadline, set five years later. The partnership's goal is to gradually expand the hydrogen fleet while maintaining economic viability. Despite challenges like the high cost of hydrogen in Hong Kong compared to mainland prices, the collaboration between Hans Group, Citybus, and Grand Resource Hydrogen signifies a positive move towards sustainable public transportation in the region.
