Hydrogen-Powered Ferry Launches in San Francisco Bay
Key Ideas
  • The MV Sea Change, a hydrogen-powered ferry, began free service between Pier 41 and the Downtown San Francisco Ferry Terminal.
  • The 75-passenger vessel uses hydrogen fuel cells to power electric motors, showcasing fuel cell technology's potential for reducing emissions.
  • The ferry can reach speeds of up to 20 knots and has a range of 300 nautical miles, emitting only water vapor as its byproduct.
  • The project, initiated in 2018, demonstrates sustainable maritime technology and aims to raise awareness of environmentally friendly transportation solutions.
The MV Sea Change, a hydrogen-powered ferry, has recently commenced offering free services in San Francisco Bay. This initiative is part of a six-month demonstration project operated by Blue & Gold Fleet to underline the potential of fuel cell technology in reducing emissions. Built by All American Marine and designed by Incat Crowther, this 75-passenger vessel is equipped with hydrogen fuel cells to power its electric motors, enabling it to achieve speeds of up to 20 knots and cover a range of 300 nautical miles. A notable feature of this ferry is that its only emission is water vapor, some of which is even purified for drinking purposes. The commencement of this project in 2018 aims to serve as a showcase for sustainable maritime technology and advocate for eco-friendly transportation alternatives in the region.
