Hyundai Rotem, a South Korean defense solutions company, is pioneering the development of the world's first hydrogen fuel-based military tank. In collaboration with the Agency for Defense Development and other defense technology research institutes, Hyundai Rotem is focusing on designing a next-generation tank model to enhance the existing K2 main battle tank. Scheduled for production after 2040, this innovative tank will introduce hydrogen fuel cells, replacing the traditional diesel engine. The hydrogen fuel cells will provide the tank with sufficient horsepower to navigate steep terrains and rough landscapes effectively. The tank will also incorporate stealth features, autonomous driving capabilities, drone operation, and a 130-millimeter smoothbore gun. An official at Hyundai Rotem highlighted that the upcoming tank will possess stronger preemptive strike capabilities, leveraging an artificial intelligence-based fire control system. As part of their strategy, Hyundai Rotem plans to initially develop a hybrid model combining diesel and electricity before transitioning to a full hydrogen fuel-based tank, showcasing their commitment to advancing military technology and innovation.
