The Shell Eco-marathon Asia Pacific and the Middle East has made its debut with a grand opening ceremony at the Lusail International Circuit in Qatar. Hosted under the patronage of HE Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, Chairperson of Qatar Museums, this event is the first of its kind in the Middle East, gathering student teams worldwide to present their energy-efficient vehicles. The ceremony emphasized innovation, sustainability, and competition, with Rob Maxwell, managing director of Shell Companies Qatar, expressing gratitude to partners for their pivotal role. The program challenges students to design vehicles that achieve maximum distance with minimal fuel consumption, aiming to inspire future scientists and engineers. With over 60 teams from 16 countries participating, Qatar is represented by teams from prestigious institutions competing in Urban Concept and Prototype classes. These vehicles demonstrate advanced engineering and innovative designs powered by various systems including internal combustion engines, battery electric, and hydrogen fuel cells. The week-long event involves testing vehicles, technical inspections, workshops, and networking activities, fostering a dynamic learning environment. Visitors also experienced driving a Shell Eco-marathon vehicle fueled by gas-to-liquids (GTL) produced in Qatar, highlighting the country's leadership in clean energy conversion. The event will culminate in a final race and awards ceremony, celebrating the participants' achievements in innovation and sustainability.
