Indonesian Partnership for Green Hydrogen-Powered Ferries in Eastern Indonesia
Key Ideas
  • PT HDF Energy Indonesia signed an MoU with various Indonesian entities to decarbonize maritime transport using green hydrogen in eastern Indonesia.
  • HDF Energy is developing 23 Renewstable® power plants that combine photovoltaics and hydrogen energy storage to produce green hydrogen for fuel cells.
  • ASDP Indonesia Ferry is assisting in identifying potential conversions to green hydrogen-powered ferries, with support from PLN and other partners for a cleaner maritime transport system.
  • This partnership signifies a positive step towards sustainability and reduced emissions in Indonesian maritime transport.
On April 16, 2025, PT HDF Energy Indonesia entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Indonesian Ministry of Transportation, PT PLN, and PT ASDP Indonesia Ferry to collaborate on decarbonizing maritime transport through the use of green hydrogen. The project targets eastern Indonesia, leveraging the region's abundant sunshine and strategic routes. HDF Energy's initiative involves the development of 23 Renewstable® power plants that integrate photovoltaics and hydrogen energy storage. The green hydrogen generated from these plants will be employed to power HDF Energy's fuel cells, thereby cutting emissions from conventional ferries. ASDP Indonesia Ferry, a significant figure in maritime transport, is actively involved in pinpointing potential opportunities for transitioning to green hydrogen-powered ferries. Furthermore, PLN, which has already shown a commitment to hydrogen, is extending its support for this project by collaborating with various partners. Additionally, PT BAg is exploring the integration of hydrogen in its maritime systems. This partnership is a notable stride towards a more sustainable and environmentally friendly maritime transport system in Indonesia.
