Innovative Collaboration for Decarbonizing Shipping Industry
Key Ideas
  • Lloyd's Register, ROTOBOOST, and Amogy are collaborating on a research project to evaluate fuel cell and Carbon Capture Storage System technologies for emission reduction in the shipping industry.
  • The research will focus on hydrogen fuel cells, ammonia, and methane cracking technologies, and carbon capture and storage to assess their readiness, economic feasibility, and regulatory implications.
  • The project aims to determine the potential emission reduction and cost-saving capabilities of these technologies compared to traditional fuels for container feeder fleets, aligning with EU ETS, FuelEU, and IMO CII standards.
  • The collaborative efforts highlight a significant advancement towards decarbonization in the shipping sector, offering insights into sustainable solutions to meet evolving carbon market requirements and international regulations.
Lloyd’s Register's business advisory team has initiated a joint development project (JDP) with ROTOBOOST and Amogy to conduct research on fuel cell and pre-combustion Carbon Capture Storage System (CCS) technologies aimed at reducing emissions in the shipping industry. The project will assess the technological readiness, financial viability, and regulatory implications of hydrogen fuel cells, ammonia, methane cracking technologies, and carbon capture and storage. Key focus areas include the capacity of these technologies to cut emissions and costs for container feeder fleets while adhering to Emissions Trading Scheme (EU ETS), FuelEU, and IMO CII standards compared to traditional fuels. The research will specifically look into Amogy’s ammonia-to-electrical power system, ROTOBOOST’s Marine Hydrogen production technology, and PowerCell’s Marine System 200 hydrogen fuel cell. The project aims to provide insights on emission reduction, cost-efficiency, and regulatory compliance. The collaboration signifies a positive step towards decarbonization in the shipping industry, addressing the increasing need for sustainable solutions to meet stringent carbon market requirements and international regulations.
